The Science
Dr. Charles P. Gerba, Microbiologist at the University of Arizona and a nationally known expert on household microbes and intestinal diseases, is one of the first microbiologists to intensely study bacteria counts in the workplace. Along with The Clorox Company, Gerba and his team of researchers have tested thousands of samples in hundreds of places.
Dr. Gerba, found that cars are the moldiest of all forms of transportation. |
He said, "most people don't realize their cars are perfect breeding grounds for germs. In cars, germs tend to build up because people aren't cleaning or disinfecting these areas", and "Our germs are traveling with us and everybody that travels in that car carries their germs in and leaves them in our car."
Most of us do not wipe down all the surfaces in your vehicle daily or weekly. Many never disinfect the interior of their vehicle. It is just something we have not paid much attention to. The fact is that our vehicles have more organisms living on the surfaces than is on the average toilet seat in our homes! That is a pretty disgusting thought.
Today's HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems and the small air-tight cars provide a perfect incubator conducive to the growth of molds, mildew, viruses and bacteria. HVAC are perfect environments for mold to thrive in. It is dark, damp and cool. When mold grows, it release spores and mycotoxins into the cabin of your car. You breathe the contaminated air that is blowing right into your face. While mildews are not as harmful to our health as molds, they tend to have unpleasant odors. This problem is prevalent in areas like our cars that get no chance to dry out thoroughly and are not disinfected on a regular basis. Cars and other forms of transportation are tight areas with little or no ventilation. Viruses live on surfaces long after their host deposits them, and the air is re-circulated and the problem of spreading viruses is exacerbated, potentially spreading illness to every passenger. The warm, humid environments of heating and cooling systems in our cars allow for bacteria to live and breed. You wouldn't think of skipping the regular cleaning of the toilet, should your vulnerable car be any different? Start today by scheduling a Cabinfresh appointment today!
"Good hygiene has prevented more disease than every vaccine and antibiotic ever invented. But we've forgotten that lesson. We need to reinvent hygiene in the 21st century." -- Dr. Charles Gerba
